Discussion of two surgical methods for achalasia of cardia

Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the ideal surgical method for achalasia of cardia.

Methods

Twenty-eight cases of achalasia from March 1998 to March 2007 were retrospectively analyzed, of which Heller's through thoracic cavity for 9 cases, abdominal Heller's-fundoplication-pyloroplasty for 19 cases. The therapeutic effect of two different surgical methods were also compared.

Results

Five cases were cured, 1 case improved, poor in 3 cases among the 9 cases of Heller's through thoracic cavity. And 18 cases were cured, 1 case improved among the 19 cases of abdominal Heller's- fundoplication-pyloroplasty. Effect between two surgical methods was statistically significant difference(P<0.01).

Conclusion

Abdominal Heller's-fundoplication-pyloroplasty is a better surgical method for achalasia of cardia.
