Expression and significance of Bcl-2 and survivin in gastrointestinal stromal tumors

Objective

To investigate the expression of Bcl-2 and survivin in gastrointestinal stomal tumors (GIST) and their clinicalpathologic significance.

Method

The expression of Bcl-2 and survivin were detected in 85 cases of GIST by immunohistochemical technique. Futhermore, multi-function precise color-image measure system was used for quantitative analysis. The relationship between expression and clinicalpathologic data was analyzed.

Results

Among 85 GISTs, the expression of Bcl-2 and survivin in benign,potentially malignance and malignance group were increased gradually. There was a significant difference among the groups of each gene′s expression, P<0.05. There was also significant different in the expression of Bcl-2 and survivin between the metastasis subgroup and the non-metastasis subgroup. There was significant positive correlation between Bcl-2 and survivin expression (rs=0.43).

Conclusions

The high expression of Bcl-2 and survivin maybe together contribute to the maglinancy, invasion and metastasis of GIST. Detection of these two markers may be useful in judging the malignancy degree and predicting the prognosis of GIST.
