Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the effects of air-forced blanket combined with doxapram on postoperative emergence in elderly patients undergoing upper abdominal surgery.

Methods

One hundred elderly patients undergoing upper abdominal surgery were randomly assigned to control group or study group, with 50 patients in each group. All patients entering PACU were warmed by routine method. In study group, the patients were additionally warmed by air-forced blanket and 0.6 mg/kg doxapram were intravenously administrated while the patients opened their eyes. The body temperature, pulse oxygen saturation, heart rate and blood pressure were recorded, and the time for opening eyes, emergence and discharging from PACU were also recorded.

Result

The body temperature recovered significantly faster in study group than in control group, P<0.05. The time for opening eyes, awake time and the time for discharging from PACU were significantly shorter in study group than in control group, P<0.05.

Conclusion

Air-forced blanket combined with Doxapram can shorten the time of emergence and discharging from PACU in elderly patients undergoing upper abdominal surgery, which deserves being widely used in clinical setting.
