Treatment of pancreatic carcinoma with the combination of laparoscopic surgery and photodynamic therapy

Abstract:

Objective

To compare the effect of the combination of laparoscopic surgery and photodynamic therapy and other palliative therapies as an initial treatment for patients with advanced-stage pancreatic carcinoma.

Methods

Twenty-eight patients with advanced-stage pancreatic carcinoma were divided into group A and B at random. Thirteen patients in group A were undergoed the combination of laparoscopic surgery and photodynamic therapy. Meanwhile, 15 patients in group B were treated by other palliative therapies: chemotherapy, radiotherapy, stent implantation, and open abdominal surgery etc.

Results

The 0.5-, 1-, 2- year survival rates in group A and B were 92.3%, 76.9%, 12.0%, and 66.7%, 42.3%, 0%, respectively. The survival rates in group A was significantly higher than those of group B(χ2=3.923, P<0.05).

Conclusion

The combination of laparoscopic surgery and photodynamic therapy is effective to patients with advanced-stage pancreatic carcinoma.
