Abstract:

The status of internal mammary lymph node (IMLN) is an independent prognostic factor for breast cancer patients, and it is an important reference for the accurate nodal staging. In patients with IMLN metastases, the prognosis would become unfavorable. Internal mammary sentinel lymph node biopsy (IM-SLNB) via intercostal space is a minimally invasive surgical procedure compared with internal mammary nodal chain dissection. Recently, with the development of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and the appearance of modified injection technique, the detection rate of internal mammary hotspots in lymphoscintigraphy has been improved significantly, IM-SLNB via intercostal spaces can access the status of IMLN with minimal risk. IM-SLNB procedure can improve the nodal staging system, and it will contribute to the individualized treatment for breast cancer patients.
