Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the effects of premedication of intravenous butorphanol on sufentanyl-induced cough.

Methods

Eighty-two ASA I or Ⅱ patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy surgery were randomly divided into two groups with 41 cases in each group. 5 min before sufentanyl injection (0.3 μg/kg in 3 s), patients received either butorphanol (1 mg diluted to 5 ml normal saline; the trial group) or normal saline (5 ml, the control group). Two minutes after intravenous injection of sufentanyl bolus, the frequency and intensity of coughing were recorded.

Results

The cough frequency and intensity were significantly lower in the trial group than those in the control group.

Conclusion

Premedication with 1 mg intravenous butorphanol can inhibit sufentanyl-induced cough.
