Abstract:

Lateral lymph node metastasis is an important predictor of poor prognosis in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). Missed diagnosis of lateral lymph node metastasis before surgery will increase the risk of recurrence and the accompanying secondary surgery. For the enlarged lateral lymph nodes of PTC patients with risk factors, it may be recommended to extend the indications of fine-needle aspiration cytology to find out more occult metastatic lateral lymph nodes and develop a more appropriate range of cervical lymph node dissection. Thus, this article reviews the pattern and risk factors of lateral lymph node metastasis in PTC.
