Abstract:
Objective
To evaluate the expression of aldehyde-dehydrogenase class 1(ALDH1)in colon cancer and its significance.
Methods
Expression of ALDH1 protein was investigated by immunohistochemical staining method in 76 cases colon cancer tissues without the history of radiotherapy or chemotherapy and normal colonic mucosal tissue.
Results
ALDH1 was detected in 34.2%(26/76)colon cancer tissues. There was no relationship between ALDH1 protein expression and age, gender, blood group, serum CEA level,lymph-node metastasis, histological grade, infiltration degreed and Dukes stage. When Q>120 was used as the cut-off point of high and low expression of ALDH1,the 5-year overall survival rate of low expression group was much higher than the high expression group(69%vs 30%,P=0.040).
Conclusions
Expression of ALDH1 can be detected in colon cancer. The higher level ofALDH1 is related with poor prognosis and it may be a potential prognostic index.
