Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the hospitalizations of thyroid cancer patients undergoing thyroidectomy, and to provide a basis for management, clinical prevention and treatment.

Methods

An investigation was conducted by means of the retrospective survey and the medical records retrieval system. The data of patients suffered from thyroid cancer in a hospital in Guangzhou from 2003 to 2012 was made out, including gender, age, pathological type, treatment, treatment results, complications, hospitalization days, cost and so on.

Results

Thyroid cancer could occur at any age, the peak age of onset was from 40 to 59 years old. More female patients suffered from tumor than male. The main histologic types were papillary carcinoma(84.36%), and the cure rate of papillary and follicular adenocarcinoma was the highest(95.12%). The main approach of thyroid surgery was unilateral total thyroidectomy with a subtotal thyroidectomy of the other side. The cure rate was 90.60% during the 10 years. Periods before and after operation were respectively (4.32±3.24) days and (4.99±2.84) days. The average hospital stay was (9.37±5.31) days, and average hospitalization cost was RMB (13 708.96±7 237.52)yuan, proportion of drug fees up to (23.60±8.34)%. Postoperative complication rate was 1.01%.

Conclusions

The middle- and aged women should pay attention to causal prophylaxis of thyroid cancer. The therapeutic effect is satisfactory with less complications and reasonable proportion of drug fees in our hospital.
