Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the outcome of ultrasound-guided Mammotome system in completely removing benign breast lesions and to find out the clinicopathological factors that might be related with residual lesions with an emphasis on lesion characteristics.

Methods

The date of 1143 female patients with benign-presumed breast lesions from January to December 2012 in our department were retrospectively analyzed. Sonographic follow-up evaluation was performed with a mean interval of four months.

Results

Two thousand three hundred and six benign breast lesions were removed. Follow-up information was available in only 304 patients. 46.7% (142/304) of them did not have residual lesions. Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that residual lesions at the former sites were more often observed in breasts with multiple, cystic and large lesions.

Conclusions

Besides such factors as needle size and follow-up interval, biopsy outcome is also related with lesion characteristics such as number, nature and size. Unifying the lesion characteristics is of clinical significance for accurately evaluating the biopsy procedure.
