Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the expression of P21 activated kinase 1 (PAK1) protein in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), and to figure out its clinical significance.

Methods

We used strept avidin-biotin complex (SABC), the sensitive immunohistochemistry, to detect the expression of PAK1 in eighty paraffin-embedded specimens, including 55 PTC and 25 benign thyroid nodules, and to explore its relationship with clinicopathological characteristics of PTC.

Results

43.6% of PTC specimens showed significantly higher expression of PAK1 protein than that of benign lesions of thyroid, which had only 8.0% positive expression rate (χ2=9.950, P=0.002). The expression of PAK1 was positively and significantly correlated with tumor invasion, advanced stage and lymph node metastasis (χ2=5.832, P=0.016; χ2=4.448, P=0.035; χ2=4.990, P=0.025), but it had no correlation with age, gender, tumor size, multiple tumors and bilateral tumors in PTC.

Conclusion

The high expression of PAK1 in PTC is related to the possibility of proliferation, invasion and lymph node metastasis.
