Abstract:
Objective
To investigate the effect of the mental self-help education intervention on the emotional state of patients after breast cancer surgery.
Methods
One hundred and forty-seven patients planed to be modified radical mastectomy for breast cancer were divided into experimental group (76 cases)and control group(71 cases)using a random number table.The mental state of those patients were evaluated with Zung self-rating anxiety scale(SAS)and Zung self-rating depression scale(SDS)on one week and one month after the operation.The control group was used conventional care and health education,while the experimental group was taught with mental self-help education by the trained psychological specialist nurses,including collective weekly psychological coun seling and psychological testing skills education and disseminating health education manuals and audio-visual information.The changes were compared between two groups of patients with anxiety and depression before and after interventions.
Results
After the mental self-education,the scores of anxiety and depression in the experimental group were lower than before the intervention.Between the two groups after the mental self-education,the scores of anxiety and depression in the experimental group were lower than the control group.As for the control group,the scores of anxiety and depression after intervention were higher than before,there were statistical differences significance(P<0.05).
Conclusion
The anxiety and depression of patients after breast cancer surgery can be eased by mentalself-education.
