Abstract:

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy can improve self-esteem and health-related quality of life of breast cancer patients. Autologous flap breast reconstruction and implant breast reconstruction are common modes of breast reconstruction. Autologous reconstruction has different autologous flaps, and one-stage implant reconstruction and two-stage procedure using prior insertion of a tissue expander followed by the implant are two types of implant based reconstruction methods. There are different types of implants, timing of reconstruction may be immediate or delayed following mastectomy, and radiotherapy may be needed after reconstruction. Different reconstruction materials, timing of reconstruction and radiotherapy may have impact on the patient-reported outcome with breast reconstruction. This article reviews the progress in patient-reported outcome for different methods of breast reconstruction.
